SnoPlanks Co-founder James Nicol was seeking a snowboard that allowed him to surf the snow. When he didn’t find what he wanted, he began shaping it himself.
James grew up skiing and snowboarding in Oregon. However he moved to San Diego for school in 2000 and caught the surfing bug while living in Mission Beach. His love for surfing kept him in San Diego for ten years and it was during this stint that he started shaping boards in his backyard
After James met his wife, who was originally from Oregon as well, the two decided they wanted to return to their roots to start a family. Both sharing a love for Mt. Bachelor, they packed up their bags and called Bend their new home.
Being reconnected with Mt. Bachelor and the surf style features of the mountain inspired James to begin messing around and pressing snowboards in his garage, literally bending plywood and cutting out boards, glassing them like surfboards for strength and flex. Utilizing Mt. Bachelor as his testing facility, James would try out new shapes, consistently testing and trying new materials, and slowly the shapes began to progress.
When he discovered bamboo in 2014 and began using the wood material to produce boards, James knew he had found the answer. A board that was light, had an incredible amount of pop in the wood, and was extremely responsive in powder conditions. Knowing he was onto something, James continued to dial in the product and SnoPlanks was born.View full product details
In 2014, SnoPlanks Co-founder Ryan Holmes joined his great friend James in creating a ski/snowboard brand that was unlike anything else, with authenticity at it's core. Not fully satisfied in what the traditional ski/snowboard products offered when it came to exceptional powder riding, the SnoPlanks duo set out on a path to think differently, and build a brand of snow sliding products that provided the most optimal riding experience in the most ideal snow conditions, Powder!
Ryan was born and raised in Lakewood, WA, outside of Seattle, where he made the regular weekend commutes up to Crystal Mountain with his entire family for days of fun on the mountain. It was at an early age that Ryan's family started making annual winter trips to Bend, and that was where he fell in love with the slopes of Mount Bachelor. Mount Bachelor just offers so much in terms of terrain, and you can always find the perfect line or run regardless of the conditions or your mood.
It was in college at the University of San Diego where Ryan and James met freshman year, and have been great friends ever since. USD was also the place where Ryan met his wife Heidi. They have been married for 5 years, and have a little girl, Ainsley, and a baby boy on the way. Soon after getting married, Ryan and Heidi made the lifelong dream move to Bend. Bend just offers a quality of life unparalleled to anything else. It's a great place for family and outdoor fun, but also a great place to start a company like SnoPlanks.
The idea conceived on a blue bird, powder day at Bachelor was put into motion, and through incredible hard work, passion, love, and dedication, James, Ryan and a dedicated team have built SnoPlanks to what it is today, and intend on continuing to grow it for many years to come.View full product details
Will considers himself one of the lucky few to have grown up in Bend, OR and riding Mt. Bachelor. He says, “the people, terrain, and vibe is awesome and I wouldn't trade it for anything!” His luck continued when he was brought into the SnoPlanks family as an ambassador. Over the last couple years, he has become involved in the manufacturing side of the company, he states “getting to make a product that someone will have fun on is so rewarding!”
This season, Will is excited to explore new backcountry zones in Oregon and the Northwest as well as making laps on the new cloud chaser lift that is going in at Mt. Bachelor. If things line for Will, he is looking forward to checking out the Whistler backcountry this winter.View full product details

This season, Forrest plans to ride as much untracked pow as possible while traveling around to new and old places around Oregon with the wagon in tow, exploring the backcountry, resorts and local hangouts promoting his art and snowboarding. Racing in the Legendary Banked Slalom at Mt. Baker is high on the list for Forrest, but he’s waiting to see if he make it into a lottery slot, or see if he can win a spot by competing in some of the banked slalom races around the NW. The Gerry Lopez Big Wave Challenge is always is a great time and he plans on going back to the Holy Bowly put on by Crush and his amazing crew. All of this will be followed up with some more summer shred at Mt. Hood. Instagram @forrestdevore
